Wood: An Aesthetic and Social Ecology

INTRODUCTION

exhibition Tom Thomson gallery

A quarter of the world's forest are in Canada and the second largest industry in Canada is forestry. What do we do with the trees that are cut? Woodsight.net offers a view from studio artists and designers. Architecture has not been included as the Canadian Wood Council generously looks after that domain.

Originally an exhibition at the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery, WOOD: An aesthetic and social ecology presented the work of various disciplines working with wood.

This web site has been modified to suit the medium and works with the existing archive of material. The information was drawn primarily from 1967 (when the wood program of the community colleges were introduced in Ontario) to 1998 and the opening of the exhibition. Recent additions from the past few years have also been made. While the focus for the exhibition was for Ontario the web site is currently being expanded to include Canada.

There is a large selection of images from that exhibition as well as an extensive bibliography page, educational resources, a gallery list and a list of credits.
